Door Knobs And Hardware - This is a simple guide to altering a busted doorknob at home. Carpenters fee by the hour and you also have to wait in line to allow them to have time to come back and do everything you want. Follow these simple directions and you'll be able to get rid of that bothersome door knob that sticks or will not work anymore in a couple of minutes without breaking a sweat. This manual applies to standard knobs which are found throughout your property, if you would like to modify the front door knob, nicely, that's a different story which we will deal with in another article. The first thing to do would be to go out and get the newest doorknob, decide on the one you like even if it's different to the ones that you already have around the house. The mechanics in all of them works in much the same way and their fit on the door is standard. You'll need a horizontal and a Phillips screwdriver ( the Phillips screwdriver is the one that has a rounded, star-shaped tip) and perhaps a little hammer. The process of altering the doorknob is simple and easy to do since all you will be doing is exchanging one to another.

The very first thing to do would be to break open the new doorknob and make sure all the necessary parts are there. You'll see a listing of these on the instruction page. This is the metallic bit that sticks out of the door and is drawn in the door when the knob is turned. Now have a peek at the face of the door that does not have the lock, the one that is on the inside side of the door. Have a look at the bottom of the knob, near the door itself, and you will see a little hole with a little break inside of it. Have a key like the bit of metal that's included in the new doorknob place and set it in the little gap prying it open. Pull the doorknob out since you pry the gap until it comes out completely.

You'll have removed the cosmetic portion of the mechanism and the operative part is going to be exposed. Against the door itself, you will see a round piece of metal which is held in place by 2 large screws, remove the screws all the way. Once done you will now find the interior of the wooden door and the component of the doorknob that goes through it. Push the opening and closing mechanism on the front of the door and at precisely the same time pull the remaining piece of the doorknob from the exterior, it is going to slide out smoothly leaving a hole that goes through the door. Once this is done, take the opening and closing mechanism and slide it out the front of the door too. Now you have to reverse the procedure, place the opening and closing mechanism throughout the front of the door, make sure the flat side of the mechanism looks to the side to where the door opens. If the door opens outwards the horizontal side should look outwards too, in case it opens to the interior the horizontal side should look inwards.

Now slide in the cylinder throughout the doorknob hole while holding the opening and closing mechanism pushed in so that it fits into the area provided to it at the doorknob cylinder. Find both large screws and the metal cap that goes on the interior and twist it in place. Make sure it's tight but not too tight. The operative mechanism is set up, now it's time to finish the cosmetic part of the installation. Take the decorative plate that covers the mechanism and slips into position until it locks. Before placing in the cosmetic doorknob, lock the door and try the key without actually closing the door. The door should unlock and lock without major pressure or immunity.

If it works correctly, closes the door and locks it, try out the key again. If there is resistance or it's difficult to open, loosen the screws onto the front or on the cylinder supports only a little, one or two turns should do it, try out the door again, it should be okay. Slip from the ornamental door knob on the inside and flip it a bit until it clicks and locks into position. Congratulations you're now the proud owner of a new door knob which you installed personally. There are many little things like this that you can learn how to do around the house, in your free time that will save you money and even time in case your carpenter or plumber is very active and you have to make an appointment for them to come work for you.
