This manual applies to standard knobs that are found all over your house, if you want to change the front door knob, nicely, that's not the same story which we will deal with in a separate article. The first thing to do is to go out and get the newest doorknob, decide on the one you like even if it's different to the ones that you already have around the home. The mechanism in all of them functions in much the exact same manner and their fit on the door is standard. The practice of altering the doorknob is straightforward and easy to do because all you will do is exchanging one for another.
The very first thing to do is to break open the new doorknob and also make sure all the necessary parts are not there. You'll see a listing of them on the education page. Once you're sure that the set is complete it is time to take the old one apart. Open the door and using the Phillips screwdriver remove the two screws holding the door closed mechanism set up. This is actually the metallic bit that sticks from the doorway and can be drawn inside the doorway once the knob is turned. Now have a peek at the face of the doorway that doesn't have the lock, the one which is on the inside side of the doorway. Look at the base of the knob, close to the door itself, and you will see a small hole with a tiny bit of break inside of it. Have a key like the bit of metal that's included in the new doorknob set and set it in the small gap prying it open. Pull the doorknob out as you pry the gap until it comes out entirely.
You'll have eliminated the decorative part of the mechanism and the surgical part is going to be exposed. Against the door itself, you will see a round piece of metal that's held in place by two large screws, remove the screws all the way. Once done you will now see the inside of the wooden door and the part of the doorknob which goes through it. Once this is completed, take the opening and closing mechanism and slide it from the front of the doorway also. Nowadays you need to reverse the process, set the opening and closing mechanism through the front of the door, be sure that the flat side of this mechanism appears to the side to which the door opens. If the door opens outwards the flat side should look outwards also, if it opens into the inside the flat side should look inwards.
Find the two large screws and the metal cap that goes on the inside and screw it in place. Make sure it's tight but not overly tight. Test this by turning the external knob, the opening and closing mechanism should retract without resistance. Now set the screws onto the opening and closing mechanisms, again do not over tighten them, test the doorknob again, there should be no interference or resistance. The surgical mechanism is set up, now it's time to finish the decorative area of the installationprocess. Just take the decorative plate which covers the mechanism and slips right into position until it locks. Before placing in the decorative doorknob, lock the door and try the key without actually closing the doorway. The door should unlock and lock without significant pressure or resistance.
When it functions correctly, closes the door and locks it, then try the key again. When there is resistance or it's hard to open, loosen the screws onto the front or on the cylinder affirms only a little, a couple of turns should do it, try the door again, it should be okay.
